Who is The Fiddle Project for? Anyone who wants to learn about folk styles. Anyone who wants to examine and develop their own playing. Anyone who wants to sound more folky.
What do I need to know? You’ll need some basic fiddle skills; to be able to play with G major and D major finger patterns (C, G and D for the viola edition), and to use slurred and separate bows but that’s about it. The more automatic these aspects are, the more you’ll be able to focus on the stylistic elements.
What if I don’t want to play English jigs? What if I’m looking for a more general approach to folk music? That’s OK! If you’re looking for a more general folk thing then you can substitute the tunes in the book for others of your own choosing. The Fiddle Project focuses on the process of experimentation and exploration so the skills covered are all transferable to other styles, simply apply the ‘Crucial Questions’ in the book to recordings and tunes of your choice.
Who are you? I’m Deb Chalmers, a folk musician and teacher based in London. I joined my first ceilidh band when I was 13 and have been playing traditional music ever since! I specialize in English music but also play Scottish music and a little Irish too. This project started out life as my final project for my MA in music education but has since taken on a life of its own! You can find my personal website here.
What People Say
“This is exactly what I’ve been looking for!”
“I really, really enjoyed it… the more that I played it, and the more familiar I got with it, the more I was able to play without the music, then I’m bringing in different kind of little variations and things, the happier I felt, it just really encouraged me”
“Interesting, fun, achievable and an encouragement…some of what I was learning and practicing was finding its way into other tunes as well”
“I remember I just got carried away because with the blank copy, I was putting the slurs and stuff in and bowing, and I thought, you know, I can kind of do this, and I know what I’m doing”
